London: Robert Hale, 1990. — 368 с.A book for anyone interested in timber-framing. It is a descriptive, not a `how to' book (you won't be able to build your own house after reading it!), yet it is highly detailed, covering everything from jointing techniques, roof and floor construction, staircases, through to architectural details and fittings - described both from a historical and technical perspective. There is even a chapter on the repair and maintenance of timber-framed buildings. Numerous examples of existing structures are described and explained, including ecclesiastical buildings, public buildings and houses. Written in a clear, unpretentious style and profusely illustrated by the author's superb pen and ink drawings, it appears a labour of love.Sticking strictly to timber-framed house construction, it may not be as broad in scope as the books of R.W. Brunskill or Pamela Cunnington, but the detail is amazing. Every aspect of the construction of English timber-framed houses is covered, with all possible historical and regional variations.
Particularly noteworthy are the exquisite pen and ink illustrations by the author, over 200 in number.
