From the author's introduction:
"Heinrich and Rachel Stief and their seven sons, Jacob, John, Christian, Frederick, Henry, Lutrick or Lewis, and Mattias, arrived at the Petitcodiac River [New Brunswick, Canada - Nova Scotia then] in 1766, probably in the latter half of June. The circumstances of their coming, their associates, the changing of the name from Stief to Steeves, the move from Monckton township to Hillsborough, the subsequent securing of the block of land in Monckton township which was handed over to Christian and Frederick, and other matters relating to the history and tradition of the Steeves family, I have set forth in "Samphire Greens" and do not propose to repeat them here.
This considerable volume is the result of my attempt to trace the descendants of the seven sons. If I were willing to spend another five years or so on the task, it might be possible to fill in many of the gaps which still remain. I have spent much more time on this job than I intended, however, and am anxious to rewrite the book on the St. John River, which has been out of print for many years. Also, 1966 is the 200th anniversary of the coming of the Steeves, the Lutz, the Trites, the Somers, the Jones, the Rickers and other families to the Petitcodiac. It seemed desirable to get the genealogy into print in 1965 so that the Steeves descendants would know their place in the family. (It is amazing how many people did not know from which of the seven sons they were descended.)"
